InetSuite FAQ - Getting going for the first time

Q1.1)	!Install asks for a serial number. Where do I get my serial number from?
Q1.2)	!Install says the serial number is incorrect. Why?
Q1.3)	My modem is not listed. Which modem should I choose?
Q1.4)	!InetSuite will not talk to the modem at all. The session window shows the error `No response from modem - is it connected?`
Q1.5)	Where can I find !SerTest and what is it for?
Q1.6)	When I run !SerTest I get `ERROR! Modem didn't accept AT&C0 command` and `ERROR! Modem didn't accept AT&C1 command`.
Q1.7)	Why do I get disk errors when trying to look at the Internet Suite discs?

Q1.1) !Install asks for a serial number. Where do I get my serial number from?

The serial number can be found on Disk 1 of the Internet Suite. Please see Section 3 of the manual for more details.

Q1.2) !Install says the serial number is incorrect. Why?

The serial number has been entered incorrectly. You must ensure that you use the same serial number as appears on Disk 1 of the Internet Suite. If you are using Release II of the Internet Suite, you must use your new Release II serial number.

Q1.3) My modem is not listed. Which modem should I choose?

In the event that your modem is not listed, please try the following:

DefaultF1
Factory defaults for hardware flow control - useful if your modem supports multiple factory defaults.
DefaultF
Some modems only have one factory default - this sets the modem to use it.
Default
OK in most cases, particularly if you're not using any other software with your modem.

With the majority of modems we've encountered, at least one of these is sufficient for the modem to communicate with your service provider.
If none of these work, please contact InetSuite support.

Q1.4) !InetSuite will not talk to the modem at all. The session window shows the error `No response from modem - is it connected?`

The first thing to check is that the !SerTest application can talk to the modem. If it cannot there is probably a problem with either your modem, modem cable or serial port in which case you should refer to your supplier.
If !SerTest reports that the connection is OK then the problem is likely to be due to incorrect configuration.
Possible problems are:

Serial port speed too high: Please see Refining your configuration for more details on this.
Wrong modem type is configured: Check this in the Modem setup window of !InetConfg. Try using the Default or DefaultF modem driver.
Some other software is trapping data from the serial port: Ensure that you have no other software or modules loaded that may be trying to use the serial port at the same time as !InetSuite.
To do this, re-boot your computer with the SHIFT key held down so that no other software gets a chance to load. Now run the !InetSuite application and click on Connect from the menu.
Wrong serial port is configured: Check this in the Modem setup window of the configuration application, !InetConfg.

Q1.5) Where can I find !SerTest and what is it for?

The !SerTest program can be found in the same directory as your !InetSuite application. It should be used as a diagnostic aid when problems talking to the modem arise.

Note that !SerTest will only connect to the machine's internal serial port i.e. it will not work with an Atomwide or Intelligent Interfaces serial card.

If you have an Atomwide high speed serial card, a utility called !CardTest is supplied with it which you can use instead.

Q1.6) When I run !SerTest I get `ERROR! Modem didn't accept AT&C0 command` and `ERROR! Modem didn't accept AT&C1 command`.

Please ensure you have selected Quit -> All from the !InetSuite menu before using !SerTest.

Q1.7) Why do I get disk errors when trying to look at the Internet Suite discs?

The Internet Suite is supplied on high density floppy discs. If you are using an old style RISC OS machine you are likely to have an 800K floppy drive that cannot read this format.
